Where to Stay Near the Grand Canyon?
Depending on your plans, budget, and travel schedule, there are many lodging options near the Grand Canyon. Most travelers find the towns of Flagstaff, Williams, and Tusayan to be the most convenient bases for exploring the South Rim.
Grand Day Tours offers pickup from most hotels in these communities, but with dozens of hotels and vacation rentals to choose from, it can be difficult to know which properties truly stand out. The locations below are places I personally recommend based on the years I’ve spent living and guiding here.
Where to Stay in Flagstaff
Flagstaff is the largest city in Northern Arizona and serves as the natural hub for exploring some of the Southwest’s most iconic landscapes. From Grand Canyon National Park to Sedona, Antelope Canyon, and Petrified Forest National Park, nearly every major destination in the region is within reach. Natural wonders like Meteor Crater, Arizona Snowbowl, Wupatki National Monument, Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument, Walnut Canyon National Monument, and Montezuma Castle National Monument are all accessible from town. Surrounding it all are the vast forests of Coconino National Forest and Kaibab National Forest, along with stretches of historic Route 66 that still echo the spirit of early western travel.
With its cool mountain climate, walkable downtown, and wide range of dining and lodging options, Flagstaff makes an ideal base camp for Northern Arizona adventures.

Book Comfort Inn with 15% Savings
I began my career in Flagstaff working at this very property, and I continue to hold a great deal of respect for the team here. While part of the Choice Hotels family, this location is far from a cookie-cutter Comfort Inn. The lobby reflects the character of Flagstaff and northern Arizona, offering a warm mountain lodge atmosphere that feels distinctly local.
The staff takes pride in hospitality, and their large, fresh breakfast each morning is a real advantage, saving guests both time and money before heading out for a full day of adventure.
The property offers a mix of standard rooms and suites, making it a flexible option for couples, families, and longer stays. It’s also pet-friendly, which is a major plus for travelers exploring Arizona with their four-legged companions.
Located just off the crossroads of I-17 and I-40, the hotel is exceptionally convenient for travelers arriving from Phoenix, Las Vegas, or Albuquerque. Northern Arizona University sits next door, making it a practical choice for campus visits and graduation ceremonies.
From here, you’re also perfectly positioned to explore beyond the Grand Canyon, including a scenic drive down Highway 89A through Oak Creek Canyon, widely considered one of the most beautiful roads in the country, leading into Sedona in about 30 minutes.

Book Sleep Inn with 15% Savings
Owned and operated by the same trusted team as the nearby Comfort Inn, Sleep Inn offers a slightly more intimate and streamlined experience. It’s particularly well-suited for solo travelers and couples looking for a clean, quiet, and comfortable stay.
The rooms are cozy and efficient, ideal for a restful night before a full day exploring Northern Arizona. Breakfast here is consistently fresh and generous, and one of the highlights of the property.
Sleep Inn features an indoor pool and hot tub, making it a strong year-round option. Just a block away, Comfort Inn offers an outdoor pool and hot tub, and because both hotels are owned by the same team, guests at either location are welcome to enjoy the amenities at both properties. That flexibility allows you to choose the room style you prefer without sacrificing access to additional features.
Unlike Comfort Inn, this property is not pet-friendly, which many guests appreciate if they are sensitive to allergens or prefer a pet-free environment.
An outdoor patio and grill area provide a relaxed space to enjoy Flagstaff’s cool mountain air, a thoughtful touch that adds to the overall experience.
Conveniently located near the junction of I-17 and I-40, the hotel is easy to access from all major travel routes and sits close to Northern Arizona University.

View Cypress Point Lodge on VRBO
For travelers looking for a full-home rental surrounded by pines, Cypress Point Lodge is an excellent option. This newly built property offers flexibility for both small groups and larger family gatherings. The home is thoughtfully designed with two separate living spaces that can be rented individually or together making it ideal for couples, extended families, or reunion-style stays in Flagstaff.
Located in the Continental area of town, the lodge provides easy access to the public golf course and sits near forested land just beyond the city limits. The setting feels quiet and residential while still being conveniently positioned for exploring Northern Arizona.
The backyard is fully gated and pet-friendly, complete with a dedicated dog run, a rare and welcome feature for guests traveling with pets. The surrounding green space also means frequent sightings of local wildlife, including deer and elk moving through the neighborhood.
I recently toured the property in person and was impressed by the thoughtful layout and the way it blends modern design with its mountain surroundings. Open kitchen and living areas create a welcoming atmosphere, while multiple decks offer expansive views of Flagstaff. A backyard hot tub makes it especially enjoyable to unwind under Northern Arizona’s dark skies after a full day of adventure.
For guests who prefer space, privacy, and the comfort of a full home rather than a traditional hotel stay, Cypress Point Lodge is a strong choice.
Where to Stay in Williams
Williams is a charming mountain town of roughly 3,000 residents, nestled at the base of Bill Williams Mountain and surrounded by towering ponderosa pines. With its cool air, historic streets, and slower pace, it offers a distinctly different feel from larger gateway cities.
Home to the legendary Grand Canyon Railway, Williams has served as a gateway to the Grand Canyon for well over a century. The town also proudly preserves its connection to historic Route 66, with a walkable downtown that still reflects the charm and character of the original “Mother Road.”

Book Best Western Plus Inn of Williams
I’ve picked up many guests from the Best Western Plus Inn of Williams over the years and have consistently found it to be one of the nicer and more distinctive properties in town.
The lobby immediately sets the tone, western artwork, kachina displays, and rustic décor give the hotel a genuine mountain-lodge atmosphere. The property sits slightly elevated among the pines, creating a quiet, tucked-away feel, even though Interstate 40 access is just moments away.
Guests frequently comment on the spacious rooms, large bathrooms, and comfortable accommodations. The property also includes its own restaurant and bar, which occasionally features live cowboy music, a fitting touch in a town so closely tied to Route 66 and Grand Canyon history.
A short drive down historic Route 66 brings you into the heart of downtown Williams, where local shops, diners, and classic neon signs preserve the character of the original “Mother Road.”
For travelers who want easy highway access while still enjoying a forested mountain setting, the Best Western Plus Inn of Williams is a dependable and comfortable option.

Visit Sheridan House Inn Website
Sheridan House Inn is a true boutique bed and breakfast, founded by a husband-and-wife team dedicated to creating a refined and deeply personal guest experience. This is not a hotel, and it’s not a vacation rental, it is a thoughtfully curated adults-only retreat designed for relaxation, romance, and quiet comfort.
Breakfast here is not an afterthought. It is prepared in-house each morning with care and attention to detail, and nearly every guest I’ve picked up from Sheridan House speaks at length about both the quality of the food and the warmth of their stay.
The property sits at the end of Sheridan Road, right at the edge of Kaibab National Forest, surrounded by ponderosa pines. Elk, deer, birds, and squirrels frequently move through the area, giving the inn a secluded forest feel while still being just a few blocks from historic Route 66 and downtown Williams.
The inn is designed specifically for adult travelers and does not accept reservations from families with children or pets, helping maintain a peaceful and intimate atmosphere.
Each guest room is uniquely styled, with forest views, upscale finishes, and carefully selected décor. Several rooms feature private patios or outdoor hot tubs, making it especially appealing for anniversaries, honeymoons, or simply a quiet mountain escape.
For travelers seeking something more refined and romantic than a standard hotel stay, Sheridan House Inn stands apart as one of the most distinctive lodging experiences in Northern Arizona.
Where to Stay in Tusayan
Tusayan is the closest lodging area to the South Rim entrance of the Grand Canyon. Located just outside the park gates, it offers unmatched convenience for travelers who want to minimize drive time and maximize time inside the park.
Unlike Flagstaff or Williams, Tusayan is a small gateway community with a limited number of lodging options, all centered around quick access to the park. For guests planning early sunrise visits or shorter stays focused primarily on the Grand Canyon itself, Tusayan can be an excellent choice.
-
Visit The Squire at Grand Canyon Website
The Squire at Grand Canyon, part of the Holiday Inn Resort family, is one of the most amenity-rich properties in Tusayan and offers a resort-style experience just minutes from the South Rim entrance.
Guests often appreciate the outdoor pool and recreation options, including an on-site bowling alley and game area, features that are relatively unique for this gateway community. With multiple dining venues, restaurants, and bars on site, the resort provides convenient options for meals and evening relaxation without needing to leave the property.
For families or travelers who enjoy having entertainment and dining easily accessible after a full day at the canyon, The Squire serves as a comfortable and lively base camp.

Visit The Grand Canyon Plaza Hotel Website
The Grand Canyon Plaza Hotel is one of the longstanding properties in Tusayan. While it carries a more classic motel style, it remains well maintained and continues to be a dependable option for guests staying just outside the park entrance.
The on-site Wagon Wheel Saloon provides a convenient place to unwind in the evenings, offering a relaxed atmosphere after a full day exploring the canyon. The hotel is also located directly next door to the Grand Canyon IMAX Experience, making it especially convenient for visitors interested in seeing the IMAX film before or after entering the park.
For travelers prioritizing proximity to the South Rim with walkable access to nearby attractions and dining, The Plaza Hotel remains a practical and comfortable choice.
